I recently bought the "The Dark Knight Returns" paperback but I can't bare to finish it. The art is hard to follow and the story confuses me; why is Batman shooting people? How is his butler, who was an old man when Batman was young, still alive and active? Who are this mutant gang? I have never heard of them before.
To me it just seems like a story about females trying to do the jobs of males and not being able to.
Does it get better further in? Does anyone else not like it? Or is it just me?

Cool, this looks to set things up for the crossover with
Batgirl.
Shame they've miscredited the artist on the cover as Ramon Bachs instead of Marcus To.

The film lurches forward with unfinished scenes and loose connections that make it hard to follow: what you remember is the heroic-fascist set design, the dark musings about the nature of heroism and Ledger's deranged laugh.
